Shilajit is a black, sticky substance that forms when plants die and decompose. It develops over centuries in the cracks of rocks and boulders. It is traditionally found in the Himalayan region of South-East Asia. But is found in mountainous areas around the world.
Shilajit has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. More recently, it has become popular in the Western world as a food supplement. It is claimed to contain micronutrients that can slow down ageing, improve fertility, fight cancer and much more.
Use: half a gram in a glass of lukewarm water in the morning before breakfast and the same dose in the evening before bedtime.
Traditional uses: immune modulating, chronic fatigue, brain function, energy enhancing, improving physical performance, skin vitality, digestion, stress hormone reducing.
Shilajit contains fulvic acid, as it is known. Studies have shown that shilajit can increase collagen production, reduce fatigue and improve muscle strength and recovery. But more research is needed to confirm the findings. One study showed that shilajit may reduce or reverse Alzheimer’s.
Other studies have shown that shilajit can increase testosterone levels and increase the number of vital sperm. In Ayurvedic medicine, shilajit is used for many purposes, including reducing inflammation.
Studies have shown that shilajit can be immune modulating, i.e. adjust the immune response as an adaptogen. It is not really known how it works, but there are signs that it is also interesting as a supplement in tumors.
