MCT means Medium Chain Triglycerides. Glyceride simply means fat, triglyceride is their chemical structure.
They are found in various foods but probably the best known is coconut oil, which is largely composed of these fatty acids. Pureness MCT oil is extracted from coconut oil.
Uptake and conversion to energy is much more efficient for medium chain fatty acids than for long chain fatty acids where the breakdown is more complicated. They are considered to have a wide range of health benefits:
– MCT oil from coconut is popular in low-carb diets. It is mixed in coffee, for example.
– Has long been used by bodybuilders as it is a source of energy that is not as easily stored as fat. Can also help with weight loss and fat burning.
– Used for brain health, for concentration, memory and to counteract Alzheimer’s and age-related brain changes.
– MCTs have applications for immune and stomach health. Caprylic acid is thought to help counteract Candida and fungal overgrowth.
– Considered to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action.
Pureness MCT oil contains 60% caprylic acid (C8) and 40% capric acid (C10).
It is tasteless, odorless and colorless and is useful in cooking. It can withstand heating but is not recommended for frying.
