What is Maca?
Maca comes from two words in the South American language Guechua, ‘ma’ meaning ‘grown in the mountains’ and ‘ca’ meaning ‘food that strengthens’.
Maca, or Lepidium Meyenii, is a root that grows in the Andes of Peru at an altitude of 3500 to 4500 meters. It has adapted to living in the rather harsh conditions of the Andes, with hot days and cold nights, which is why it is so hardy.
Maca is a root vegetable that looks like a radish or turnip and tastes a bit like a cross between horseradish and parsnip. The plant belongs to the cress genus of the cruciferous family and is thus closely related to garden cress and, to a large extent, broccoli or cabbage.
